Antigua and Barbuda: Your space for conscious travel

A destination known for its 365 beaches and soft sands, Antigua and Barbuda is increasingly becoming recognized for its dedication to environmental conservation and protection. Named Lonely Planet’s Emerging Sustainable Destination of 2021, Antigua and Barbuda was one of the first Caribbean islands to introduce a ban on single-use plastics in 2016, followed by a ban on the use of Styrofoam in 2019. By 2040, the government of Antigua and Barbuda has planned for the destination to be completely run by green energy.

The environmentally conscious traveller can enjoy a selection of eco-friendly tours and activities organized by the Environmental Awareness Group; one of Antigua and Barbuda’s main conservation organisations. One can take part in bird watching, with 147 bird species spread across 39 birding hotspots, or go on a turtle tour of the three nesting species that inhabit the islands – The Hawksbill, Green and Leatherback turtles. The EAG also works to keep species such as the Antigua rattle snake, safe on offshore islands by working to remove invasive species like harmful and poisonous rodents. Offshore island tours and activities also include whale watching and snake spotting. Visitors wishing to experience the local community on the main island of Antigua can visit the community managed Walling’s Nature Reserve, which houses a plethora of nature trails.

While the local environment is of great importance, Antigua and Barbuda has much appeal to those looking to transform mind, body and soul. Often surrounded by breath-taking views, many hotels and resorts provide an array of wellness facilities including spas, plunge pools, saunas, and fitness classes. Visitors may take advantage of wellness retreats where they are guided through meditation, secluded walks, nutrition classes and life coach sessions.

For those wishing not to stay on an all-inclusive resort, Energie Antigua located in English Harbour, is a hub for yoga and holistic healing. With A plethora of yoga classes for all levels, a fresh produce smoothie bar, fully equipped gym and beautifully decorated modern accommodation, Energie Antigua provides an ideal environment for a transformative vacation.

Anyone with the desire to unplug from the world and experience the Antiguan great outdoors can camp out at Valley Beach with the Wild Lotus Group; where guests can grill their dinner under the stars and enjoy the natural surroundings from their luxurious camping accommodation.

With Antigua and Barbuda, the beach really is just the beginning!
